BOWLING.

Bl JaOC. The interprovinciai match, Otago v. Canterbury, will be played in Christchurch on Thursday, February 24. The soutnem players will leave Dunedin on the preceding Wednesday and will return on Friday. "Five rinks wifi be selected irom the Dunedin Centre and one each Irom Sc nth Otago, North Otago, and Otago Csrirui. Thu team will be composed ol the best available players, and clubs have been asked to nominate players of leoagmsed ability, who are able to undertake the trip. Tne names will be jorwarc'od to the secretary of the Dunedin Centre (Mr R. Hanning), and will be finally dealt with by the executive’s selector or selectors. Air Hanning has written to the secretaries of the centres. North and South Otago and Otago Central, asking them to advise by February X if they have been successful in securing their full quota of players. The Southland bowling, tournament was brought to a successful conclusion at Invercargill on Wednesday last, the finals in both the rinks and pairs competitions going to visitors from the north. The green made a wonderful recovery after the heavy rain overnight, and generally speaking the conditions were good. In the rink game Thorn scored a hollow victory over Lopdel], whose men did not play up to the form they showed in the earlier stages of the competition. M‘Curdy’s St. Hilda rink had the bye, and in the afternoon met and defeated Thorn’s rink in the final. The morning’s play in the pairs produced some particularly good play, and the game in which Falconer defeated Stead by 15 to 14 was at all stages interesting. In the semi-finals the Southland skip, Piercy, and his partner wont down by a big margin to Falconer, and Carswell, who eventually turned out to be the winner, finished 3 up over the Haituna skip. Sanders. Strang also defeated Bentley by 1, and by defeating Falconer in the afternoon was left to contest the final with Carswell. Meeting Piercy in the semi-finals of the rinks Thorn won by 3, but there was little difference in the strength of the two rinks. In the final Thorn finished 2 down against M'Curdy, whose rink generally showed up to advantage. Scoring a 5 on the eighteenth head M'Curdy left Thom a very remote chance, the St. Hilda man having a lead of <9. On the last head Thom required 4 to win, but his lead played short, and the head was so built up that Thom was faced with an almost impossible shot to win. In the final of the pairs Strang was unequal to the task of defeating the Taieri veteran, who from the seventh end established a lead and finished up with a good many to spare. A feature of the game was the excellent drawing of Carswell. Tire executive of the Dunedin Bowling Centre proposes to send nine rinks, if possible, to Central Otago early next month, to play local chibs and two representative matches with the Central Otago Centre. It is intended to leave Dunedin on Thursday, February 3. and to send three rinks via Lawrence and Roxburgh, and six rinks, to Clyde and Cromwell. Should a sufficient number of players be available to make the trip matches would be played with the Lawrence, Roxburgh, Alexandra, Clyde, and Cromwell Clubs, and in addition two eightrink inter-centre games would be played at Clyde, the headquarters of the centre, on Saturday, February 5. The visitors would, return on Monday, February 7. Players wishing to make this trip are requested to send in their names not later than January 24 to Mr R. Hanning, secretary of the Dunedin Bowling Centre. A selection will be made if more than the required number of names are received. Three rinks from St. ' Hilda journeyed to Waikouaiti on Saturday, and were hospitally entertained by the Waikouaiti duo. The president of St. Hilda Club Sir W. M'Alister), in returning thanks for e manner in which the Waikouaiti dub entertained his club, stated that he was requested by the visitors to convey their admiration of the trueness and keenness of the green, which he was sure would be an eye-opener for any city club that may visit Waikouaiti during the coming season. Mr Neil Stewart, the president of Waikouaiti, in his reply, stated his club was pleased to know that the visitors had enjoyed themselves, and in the near future it was their intention to pay St. Hilda Club a return visit. The following is the result of the day’s play;—

Totals 67 52 The newly formed ladies’ branch of the North-East Valley Club is proving a very live body, and the ladies are showing much keenness and alertness in their pursuit of “Jack.” Not a few of them are quickly mastering the intricacies of the game. To the enthusiasm and experience of -Mr, Hector Mercer ‘‘Elderly Bowlers’ Day”, owes its great popularity and success which’ has been such a pronounced feature for some years past. The members of the .Dunedin Bowling Club invite all elderly bowlers (members of an affiliated club) to be present on the Dunedin Bowling Club’s green, Cumberland street, on Saturday, Februifty, 12, on the occasion of the seventh anniversary of the “Elderly Bowlers’ Day.” The executive of the Dunedin Bowling Centre has courteously arranged that no , interclub ' matches be played on this day. For the convenience of visiting bowlers, and to afford _as many opportunities as possible of meeting together and renewing the days of “Auld Lang Syne,” the green will be open for play from 10 a.m. on the Saturday, morning. The gathering for I the afternoon isfixed for 2 p.m., and to enable the rinks to be drawn and published in the Friday’s newspaper, all bowlens wishing to take part are asked to see that the secretary of their club has sent in their names to the secretary of die Dunedin Club (H. The members of the Dunedin Bowling Club will be pleased to have* ■die assistance and co-operation of all bowling clubs in endeavouring to make the Elderly Bowlers 5 Day as successful as previous years. To avoid any of the elderly bowlers being overlooked, secretaries of clubs are asked. to place this invitation on the dub’s notice board; also to make a point of forwarding the names of their players before Tuesday.
