LONDON, September 27. A British Imperial Antarctic expedition, consisting of Lieutenant Cope, (J. H. Wilkins, C. M. Lester, and W. Bagshawe, left Ixmdon for ChrisUania, whence th<'y will start on a preliminary trip to the Antarctic via the Falklands and Deception Island to Hope Bay, Graham Land, where they will establish a base, spend a year in exploring the Weddell Sea and Deception Island, then return to London to arrange for a big expedition occupying five years, during which .specially-pre-pared aeroplanes will be utilised 'for a dash to the South Pole.—A. and. GERMAN TRADE RECOVERING. BERLIN, September 27. Striking official figures illustrate the recovery of German trade. Last year the imports totalled 32J, billion marks "and tho' exports 10 billion marks. From January. 1 to May 31 of the current year the imports were 28i billion marks and the "exports 23 2-3 rd"billion marks. The exports havo oxcecded the imports sinco March. Tho exports for May were more than doublo the January exports. The figures, however, throughout include unspecified sums on occount of reparation. — Router.
ARGENTINE WOOL SCHEME,
BUENOS AIRES, September 26. The Argentine Government has submitted to Congress a project to facilitate tho sale and export of enormous stocks of wool, amounting to 22,471,231 kilograms, which have accumulated in the Argentine. If Congress sanctions the scheme it will result in easy disposal to foreign countries, which will receive two years' credit. Tho Italian Government lias offered to purchase 50,000 tons of the wool.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
SALE OF WITLEY ESTATE. LONDON, September 27. (Received Sept. 28, at 11.350 p.m.) Lord Dudley s Witley Estate has been subdivided into 192 lots, and practically the whole has been, sold to the existing tenants, despite angry protests by intending outsido buyers, ai each lot was withdrawn when the reserve was reached. The purchasers of 'Witley Court propose to concert it into an hotel.—A. and N Z Cable.
SCOTLAND AND PROHIBITION. LONDON, September 28. (Roe. Sept. 29, at 0.10 a,m.) Tho National Citizens' Council, vjliich is in charge of the local veto campaign in Scotland, professjs to be quite satisfied regarding the results of the propaganda, particularly the fact that polls are assured in all important centres in tho country, the percentages of voters vary.ing from the requisite 10 to 50 per cent. " The Scottish newspapers are flooded with advertisements and correspondence. The local veto ■poll will take place the same day as tho Scottish municipal elections, which will ensure a large poll. The licensed trade asserts that the prohibition campaign will receive a rude shock.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
