GOVERNMENT PROTECTION SOUGHT.

OAMARU. September 28. The Oamaru Presbytery, as Uio.Committee on Protestant Principles for the Presbyterian General Assembly, to-day passed the following resolution, with an instruction that it be scut to the Prime Minister: —

" While recognising the right of every branch of the Christian Church to formulate its own terms df communion, and to exercise ecclesiastical discipline upon its members' in accordance therewith, yet inasmuch as the application of the No Tcmero decree in overy case of mixed marriage affects a.party who is* not under jurisdiction of tho Church of Rome, and traverses the law of the land and tlie law of all non-Roman Catholic churches by declaring in-valid a marriago duly solemnised according to those laws; and inasmuch as this decree has been so applied as to disturb tho peaco of families and to break up homos, and to aifect seriously the social standing of members of homos; '.' And inasmuch as there is generally conceded to the Government the right to legislate prohibiting polygamy and free marriage, the Presbytery of Oamaru, acting in its carpal city as the Protestant Principles Committee of tho General Assembly of tho Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, calls upon tho Government to devise means for the protection of tho social interests and civil rights of all parties- affected by this decree, ei.ther by somo amendment to the Marriage Act or by the inclusion of a now clause in the Crimes Acb (if necessary) similar to clause 174 of tho new penal code of Italy.
