A WINTRY SNAP. A wintry snap, which was in sharp contrast to the mild weather conditions obtaining a few days ago, was experienced in Dunedin over tho week-end. Saturday morrting broke clear and cold, and although the weather remained fine overhead for several hours a squall blow up from the south-west shortly before 1 o'olook, and this was followed by driving showers of rain, sleet, and snow. For some time theso conditions prevailed, and it became intensely cold. The storm was of great severity, and the hills around tho city were soon covered with a thick coating of snow. Boisterous and squally conditions continued throughout the afternoon, necessitating the abandonment of most of tho sporting fixtures, and matters improved to only a slight extent during the evening. Yesterday a strong wind blew up from the south-west, but the sky was clear overhead,' and the air was decidedly less severe than that on tho previous day.

Considerable damage was done to outbuildings, fences, and chimneys, and big trees wore uprooted. The gale is still raging. SNOW IN CENTRAL OTAGO. (Fbom Odb Own Coreespondent.) CROMWELL, May 22. Heavy storms havo prevailed inland during the last few days. A cold southerly storm last night brought rain, • but later snow was falling right down to tho low levels. To-day snow has fallen almost continuously on the mountains, and at times has extended to tho flats. At present there is no eicTi of the storm clearing. ALEXANDRA, May 22. A cold blizzard is visiting the district to-day. Tho .ranges are covered with snow right down to tho foot, and it is still snowing.
