.QSPRISONERS SENTENCED. (Peb United Pkess Association.) / AUCKLAND, May 22. At the Supreme Court two Maoris—Paul Tene and ilori Penetito—for assault on a European at 'liteko, were sentenced, Tene to 12 months' reformative treatment, and Penotito was fined £15 and ordered to pay £10 towards tho cost of the prosecution. In reply to cou»sel for Tone, Mr Justice Chapman said: "1 havo never seen my way to overlookoa brutal assault in which a man has been injured. 1 always give imprisonment in such cases. This ia not an arbitrary rule, and tho necessity for it has been proved over and over again. Ido not wish to interfere with others who administer justice, but I sometimes think that some magistrates are too lenient in dealing with drunken assault!; I do not mention any names; indeed, .1 could not recall them if I tried, but as I say, I feel that such cases are often too leniently dealt with." Thomas Percival M'Quillan, for theft in the Itotofua district, was sentenced to three years' hard labour and declared an habitual criminal. He had a long liet of previous convictions. Wiremu Eana, also with a bad record, who is already serving a sentence of a year's hard labour and not more than four years' reformative, treatment, was sentenced to a period for the theft of a horse from a relativo, thus adding a few months to his term f of incarceration.
