CLUTHA WINTER SHOW

Tho winter show at Balclutha -was hold yesterday. _ Tho result was disappointing, but is explainable in. two wuys, tho visit of tlio Priiico of Walts interfering with tho preparation and forwarding of oxlubita and tho season having been less favourable* than usiud to root cropa. Tho principui reason, no doubt, was tho first-mentioned, affecting, lis it did, all sections of tho show. Tho Vr&athe-r during thr< morning promised to bo fine, though cold, but in tho afternoon heavy rain commenced, interfering considerably with tho atteaidanco. Interest centred mainly in tho domestic departments, but far-more generally had tho pleasure of seeing a lino exhibition of fat sheep, excellent l.irrnips, and good samples of grain and chaff. Tho sheep wore judged by Mr W. Swalo, of Limehills, Southland, who commented most favourably upon them. Sir A. King's pen of throo fat shoop, any ago or weight, ho. considered as good as could bo seen anywhere in tho dominion. Mr King also wx-ured first prize in tho class not exceeding tw.vnhcai-. In tho one-fihenr class Mr John Uog-g secured a first and a second. Mr Hogg- was first and Mr W. B. Moffatt second for freezing wethera, and -Mr King first, with Mr Bogg semnd and third, for fat lambs, long-wool. For fat larnbu Buibablc for freezing Mr King was placed' first, with Mr Moffatt sccond and Mr B-egg tliird. Mr King secured first and second for tho any breed or cross class, and Mr Bogg first for tho three lambs to net most money for carcase, skin, and. fat

The 'wool exhibit,, which, was judged by Mr T. Kirby (Baldutha) consisted of four entries, one for half bird wool (Mr A. £iug first prize) and three for crossbred -wool (Mr A. 11. Moffatt 1, Mr S. W. Moffatt 2). The oats and chaff shown were excellent wnplos, especially tho chaff. Mr John Begp was the only entrant for Gartons, receiving first and second prizes. Mr D. R. tlar'.k secured tile first prino for duu oats without opposition, but Messrs Begg, A. H. ilofFatt, and Ct. Moffatt contested the Sparpowbill section, the first-named being pliced first and second, with Mr A. 11. Moffait third. Mr S. W. Moffatt secured first place for black oats, with Mr Jack sooond. White chaff di'c-w six entries, Mr tScg-g securing tho awards. Mr Jack was the only' entrant for black chaff, securing* first and seocrnd place. The judge was Mr W. M'Kcttorick (Dunedin). There was only one entry of gTasa seed, a •rood sample of perennial ryegrass by Mr G-. Moffatt, who was awarded a first- fri^.e. Despite the dryness of the season the root crop exhibits attained a good standard, particularly the turnips. The potato entries were fairly large. . There wwe cijrh; en tries for tho best collection, tho prizes going- to 'Mr S. W. Moffatt, Mr J. jfegg and Mr A. H. Moffatt in that order. M; Miuts/'s e-xhi-bit was placed first for Up to-Datas, with Mr Begg second. The tur'tip prizes wn> well distributed. Mx R. Wilson wa« first for purple top swedes, Mr P. Clent' second and third. Mr J B-?gg was tho onlv exliibitor of green topi, and took throe tickets. Mr O. Morley was first in th« ajiy variety swedo cla&s,' M; Begp second, Mr Yomtc'n third. Mr Beg-j received a first prize for the only 'entry ilAberdeen green lop yellow, and first prizs in tho purplo top jt?l!ow, with Mr G Small second and Mr A. H. Moffatt third Mr_ Moff-itt secured -ill three awaitis far th< white fleshed class. Tho " best collection" prizes went to Mr S. W. Moffatt. with his "hilly country surprise guard." The principal carrot awards were secured bv Messrs J. Begg and H. Bower. Mi Begg j,-is awarded pl.ico_ for parsnip®, Mr Wilson for cnbbogets, and' Mr J. Clark for leeks. Mr Bc-gg's entry was placed llrst for onions, and gained first award for beet-. _ Tho best collection of vegetables resulted: Messrs J. Clark 1, J. Gfeggie 2 W. Yorston 3. Mr D. Sutherland (MO3inel) "was judge.

For the best collection of desert apples the placing was Mr Kitto 1, Mr MofTntt 2 and 3. Thr judge, Mr C. )?. >foj?h (Dunodin) was also responsible for. the preserves. Mr J. Wilb'ns was the only cjJhibjtor for honey, and was awards a first prize. Miss M'Lcan came first in the beat collection of jams, with Mrs P. Mason second. Mrs ALason had the only entry of preserved fruit, but in awarding first prise the judge remarked that tho exhibit was one of special merit The flower classes drew little or no competition, Mr J as. Clark, with his chrysanthe- ! mums, having the field practically to himself. The display, with the assistance of a largo number of various plants for exhibition, helped to set off the hall, and show how much would be gained at these shows on fuEuro occasions if competitors would come forward.

Mm J. J. Nyhon (6f Sandymount) had the pleasant task of judging the lwikery oxhibite, which formed an excellent display. Mi» F. Clark came first for white broad, with Mrs J. Richards second anW third. The tatter secured the brown -bread awards. In scones tho placing was: Girdlreconea—Mrs G-. Mooro (1 and 2), and M Jas. Lory: oven scones—Mrs J. Marshall. Mrs Richards, tod Miss CE&rk; brown scon 3 *—Mendames Moore (1 and 2). and Richards; potato soon-ss—Mesdames P. Mason, Moore, and Richarck. Tho pikelet awards went to Mrs Lory (1 and 21. and Mis Hannah Rooney; oatmeal colfes, Mrs Richards (1 and 2), and Mrs Mason; pastry, Mesdames S. White and Moore; shortbread, Mesdames Rich-.-rds, Mooro, and Miss ■Rooney; fruit cakg. Mesdarocs ,T. I). Sim, l Mooro, and Mi?s 'Keys; fruit cako (dark), Mrs Sim and Mfcs M'Lean; fruit cako flight), Mesdorntfi Sim, Davis, and Mcore; gingerbread, Mofldames Mooro and Richards ; sponge cako, Mesdames Richards, with Mrs Tweed ie second arid Mrs Kirkness third, in another fresh class. Tho placing for powdered butter was: Mts Kirlcness 1 and 2, Miss Tweedie 3; saJt butter: Air= 0. Davis 1, Mis Twcodie 2, Mrs Kirkness 3.
