Bad weather was general round the West Coast yesterday. Greymouth reported a ■ south-west gale and a very heavy sea. Heavy rain and squally hail showers were falling, find there woe a slight fresh in the river. There was no possibility of working the bar before to-day at the earliest. There was a heavy sea on tho bar at Westport. The weather was very bad, and there was no pos- . eibdlity of v despatching the Rakanoa yesterday for Lyttelton. A strong south-westerly gale was blowing at New Plymouth, with 'occasional showers of rain, and no work waa done on the Waipori. Bad weather was also reported from Onehunga. The Flora was 1 outside, but was unable to enter the harbour. The steamer Havre, with oils from Singapore, via northern ports, will be berthed at the Rattray street -wharf early this morning. The Mokoiawas expected to leave-Lyttel-ton at 5 o'clock last night ior Dunedin, where she should arrive about 9 o'clock this morning. She is to sail on Tuesday for Lyttelton, Wellington, Napier, Gisborne, and Auckland. The Opawa is expected at Port Chalmers ♦o-day from Lyttelton to discharge a quantity •f Liverpool cargo. She completes her discharge at Bluff. The Monowai was timed to sail from Auckland yesterday for Napier, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. She is due here on Wednesday. The Te Anau will leave Napier to-day for Gisborne, whence she will proceed to Lyttelton and Dunedin to load for Napier and Gisborne. • 4 The Tarawera was expected to leave Wel- . lington last night for Lyttelton, where she will complete her loading for Sydney. The Corinna left Timaru at 10 p.m. on Wednesday for Nelson and New Plymouth. _ The Karori and Kakapo are expected to leave Wellington to-day for Greymouth to load for Lyttelton. The Wanaka is due at Oamaru this morning from Bluff. She will complete her loading for Napier and Auckland at Timaru. .'.• A rare, if not exceptional occurrence, took , place in tho Atlantic ob, February 29, when the White Star Line steamer Belgio was the means of providing some badly-needed fuel to the American steamer Hilton, the ships then being some 800 miles from MNew York. The Hilton, bound for Boston, was displaying signals that she required assistance, and on the Belgio getting into communication ■with her it was ascertained that the American Ship was short of coal, and asked for a supply to enable her to reach Botson. The necessary quantity was conveyed in sacks in the ships boats from the Belgic to the Hilton a feat of no small difficulty owing to a heavy swell that existed at the time.

The Manuka is scheduled to leave Sydnev next Thursday for Wellington, ♦ ! NAVUA DUE ON SUNDAY. The Navua loft Suva on Tuesday afternoon for Auckland, where she is due on Sunday. She is bringing a cargo of fruit and sugar. ♦ VANCOUVER MAIL STEAMERS. The R.M.S. Niagara left Honolulu on Sunday afternoon for Vancouver, where she is due to-morrow. " The Makura left Suva at 3.30 on Wednesday afternoon, and is due at Auckland on Sunday. She. will sail for Sydney on Tuesday. REMUERA POSTPONED. The local office of the New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the Remuera's departure from Wellington for the United Kingdom has been postponed until June 8. CALCUTTA STEAMER. Under charter to the Union Company tho British-India Company's steamer Sofala left Calcutta on the morning of May 9 with a Bhipment of Eastern merchandise for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin, via Singapore, Java, and Newcastle. The vessel is die at Auckland! about June 15. The SofaJa is of 6381 tone gross register, and visited New Zealand porta in 1908. ~ ■"-^- OIL FOR MAUNGANUI. The first shipment of oil fuel (1000 tons) for tho bunkers of the Mlaunganui, which is now being con-voTted into an oil burner at Port Chalmers, left San Francisco on April 29 by the Waitemata. The Tahiti, which is also being converted at San Francisco, will take in a supply of oil fuel at that port. Captain L. WorroU, late of the M»>koia, will be in command of the Maunpanui when she enters the Sydncy-Wollington-San Francisco mail service.
