Gordon Davis, a waterside worker, was committed for trial on a charge of tho theft of various articles of clothing, footwear, and outlery, which had been missing irom coastal shipments, of a total value of £40. Mr F. F. Hockly, M.P. for Rotorua, has received from the Hon. D. H. Guthrie (Minister of Lands) a letter stating that it had been decided that an opportunity would be given to all fully accredited returned soldier solicitors of participatine in the legal work under the Discharged Soldiers' Settlement Acts. The Commissioner of Crown Lands will keep a list of solicitors whom he considers suitable for employment in this I

direction and work will be divided equally between the solicitors on the list. Applications to b-s placed on the list should be made to the commissioners. HOKITIKA, May 19. The Hon. J. G. Ooates, who is visiting Westland, reached tho Coast by wav of the Otira tunnel yesterday. Accompanied by members of tho Westland County Council, ho has- visited various parts of tho district, and last evening received deputations, locaj requirements being urged. The Minister wa3 entertained' subsequently by local bodies. To-day, accompanied by Mr Seddon, M.P., he will visit the Kokatahi settlement, and to-night will be entertained by the Returned Soldiers' Association. To-morrow, after having inspected serious river encroachments at Harihari, the Minister will proceed to Greymouth and the north.
