NOTES.

At the Kensington Drill Hall on Tuesday night a handsome Morris chair was provided on the platform for his Itoyai Highness to occupy. But the Prince vrcruld have none of it. He gently pushed it aside, and a member of the Reception Committee assisted him to bring forward one of tho leather chairs set aside for the other members of the Royal party and Ministers of the Crown. On the motor ran to Port Chalmers on Tuesday afternoon a slight mishap occurred to ono of the oars, with the result that the car in which the Prince was travelling was held up for a few minutes. Our Royal visftor improved the shining hour by alighting and engaging in conversation with a bevy of maidens who had, fortunately for them, selected that particular spot to got a glimpse of him in passing. The thoughtfulness of the Prince for his attendants was exemplified on Tuesday night at the Fernhill Club. Arriving there about midnight, subsequent to his attendance at the Citizens' Ball, hie Royal Highness noticed a number of policemen who were on duty within the grounds throughout the night. Later on he sent his secretary to advise the sergeant to send the men to their homes. It was a kindly act, but the sergeant had strict orders, and it was his duty to carry them out. The men greatly appreciated the Prince's consideration for them, OIL FOR THE RENOWN. Preet Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, May 19. The steamer British Light brought a cargo of oil worth £100,000 for H.M.S. Renown. SYDNEY'S WELCOME. DISSATISFIED COUNCILLORS. SYDNEY, May 19. The City Council is protesting against the action of the committee controlling th© welcome to 'the Prince of Wales in ignoring councillors by eliminating them from their proper place in the Royal procession. PLAIN ENGLISH. TO THE EDITOB. Sim,—l quoto from the Bulletin of May 6: " In England no kee than in Australia the people have become the rulers. They were bo to a, very large extent before the 'war. They are most oompletely so since. It was these new rulere that had to be convinced that the monarchical institution was a practical advantage." That quotation is sufficient for my purpose but those who are interested should read the whole' article, so that they may see how wrong is the point of view of a paper which has a very wide circulation and which is supposed to represent public opinion in Australia. . The Prince of Wales has been sent to the overseas dominions by his Majesty the King, not to try to cement the bonds of Empire— that was done by the war, —but to show, in what is the best possible form,, his Majesty's appreciation of what the various outlying parte of the Empire did towards winning the war.

In that epirit we received hie Royal Highness, and in that spirit the people of Australia will, I believe, receive him. The Bulletin's remarks on " The Throne and Its Stupid Friends" will, I feel sure, be depT©oated by the vaet majority of the people— I a-m, eto., F. H. Campbell.
