PEKING, May 18. (Received May 19, at 10.15 p.m.) Following the repeated offers of the Northern Government for the resumption of the Peace Conference, the Southern Government telegraphed that it would accept the offers provided the North agreed to the abrogation of the 1918 ChinoJapanese military pact. The North replied that the -withdrawal of the Allied troops from Siberia nullified the pact, and pointed out the necessity of immediate peace to save China economically as well as politically.—A. and N.Z. Cable. SHANTUNG SETTLEMENT. JAPANESE MACHINATIONS. ' PEKIN, May 17. (Received May 20, at 0.5 a.m.) At the annual meeting of the British of Commerce at Shanghai a resolution was adopted favouring China's claim to Shantung. Mr A. W. Burkill, chairman of the directorate, in a sneech, said that • Japan was taking deliberate steps to control the jvhole of the surrounding harbour, docks, wharves, and railroad terminals at Tsingtao, and every obstacle ■was being put in the way of otlher nations acquiring any property in ' the business centre.—A. and N.Z.
