RAILWAY RETURNS

(Peb United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 13.

The returns for the financial year ended March 31 Lost are published in the Gazette. They allow that the revenue during tho year amounted to £5.752,487 and the expenditure to £4,105,067. The proportion of expenditure to invonuo was 71.36 per cent., against 66.32 for last year. Details of tho railway working 'account follow (shillings and pence being omitted). Revenue.—North « Island: Whangarei, £60,858; Kaihu, £6,487; Gisborne, £39,235; North Island main lines and branches, £3,259,747;— a total of £3,366,330. ' South Island: South Island main' lines and branches, £2,054.204; Westland, £159,322; Westport, £90,138; Nelson, £36,733; Picton, £37,879; Lake Wakatipu steamers, £7878;— a total of £2,356,157, ana! a grand total of £5,752,487. Expenditure.—North Island: Whangarei, £52,373; Kaihu, £9957; Gisborne, £31,813; North Island main hues and branches, >£2,174,341;— a total of £2,268,486. South Island: South Islaud main line* and branches, £1,551.928; Westland, £139,458; Westport, £63,68"9; Nelson, £38,383; Picton, , £35,158; Lake Wakatipu steamers, £7963;— a total of £1,836,580, and a grand .total of £4,105,067. The number of passengers carried during the year was 12,760,814—an increase of 1,386,293 on the total for tho preceding 12 months. The number of season tickete increased from 351,124 to 400,621. The stock carried by tho railways during the year numbered 7,674,532 —an increase of 636,228. The goods traffic increased by 358,775 tons, the total for tho year being 5,597,232 tons. Minerals, which are included in this total, showed a decrease of 143,247 tons, due to reduced production of ooal from the mines.
