STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER. (Pkb United Pnnss Association.? WELLINGTON, April 3. The Prime Minister, in the course of a statement on the wheat position to-day, said that opinions had fcoen expressed which . would be certain to cause unoasiness, and this might lead possibly to panic buying. Ho vvns glad to be able to say, going by the statistics supplied by- tho Board of Trade, the outlook appears to be satisfactory. The estimated requirements for food purposes for one year wore 6,000,000 bushels. n.nd for seed 500,000 bushels, fowl feed, 750,000 bushels, or a total, of 7,250,000 bushels. Against that the New Zealand estimated yield was 4,900,000 bushels, tho balance being the Australian purchase ot 2.000.C00. with the carry-over to February 29 of 750,000 bushels, making a total of 7,650,000. The Now Zealand estimated yield' wjw based on an acreage of 140,000, with an average yield of 35 bushels.
