INFLUENZA AND PNEUMONIA

DOMINION RETURNS. POSITION REASSURING. (Per United Pbess Association.) WELLINGTON, January 6. During- the week ended January 5, 21 oases of influenza woro reported in the Wellington Health District and 11 of pneumonia. Dr Makgill, Acting-Chief Health Officer, stated ,to<lay that the dominion returns for the past fortnight allowed a very largo diminution in the number of cases of influenza and pneumonia. During the week ended December 22, 248 cases of influenza were notified throughout! the dominion, whereas in the week ended January 5 there were but 107 notifications. Regarding pneumonia, 43 cases were notified in the week ended Deoember 22, and 25 oases in the week ended January 5. The chief diminution in influenza was in Auckland, where the number of cases in _ tho week ended Deoember 22 was 224, while only 78 oases were reported in the week ended January 5.

In Canterbury there had been a marked decrease also. During the week ended December 22, 20 caeca of influenza and 10 cases of pneumonia were notified, and only five of influenza and five of pneumonia during the week ended January 5. Dr Makgill added: "Every year for a long time a number of pneumonia oases following influenza has arisen, and the existence of such cases is of very little significance. Indeed, there is evejy reason to be satisfied with the present position, and there is nothing to 'suggest any alarm whatsoever."
