(Received Jan. 5, at 7.20 p.m.) Newspapers regard the Spen Valley result as the Severest blow to t-he Coalition Government since the general election. They explain t.hat the remarkable growth of the Labour vote at the recent by-elec-tion is duo to the lower section of the middle classes, who, squeezed by taxation and the cost of living, are transferring their votes to Labour. They are not alarmed at the Labour Party's policy of nationalisation of the coal mines and the public services and of the levy on capital. —A. and N.Z. Cable.
