STARVING JACK TARS
UNABLE TO OBTAIN EMPLOYMENT. LORD BEATTY'S APPEAL. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, January 4. (Received Jan. 5, at 7.20 p.m.) Lord lieattVj interviewed, said that owing to the reduction of the naval personnel 20,000 long-service naval men who fought gallantly in the war y/ere now unemployed and suffering distress in spite of their pensions. Lord Beatty gives details of the brave deeds of several men whose families arc practically starving. He points out that skilled mechanics, electricians, and engineers are handicapped in seeking employment by the Trades Union bar regarding appienticeship. He suggests that this bar should not be applied to the sailors, and he appeals to employers to give discharged men an opportunity of earning a living.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
