(Received Sept. 9, at 5.5 p.m.) Tho report of the Government's Committee on tho question cf Government machinery in dealing with trade and commerces recommends that the consular service should remain under tho Foreign Oflice, but the Board of Trade should have a voice in tho selections and promotions in the consular commercial and diplomatic service. The board rejects Sir Auckland Geddes's suigesticm for tho appointment of permanent Hoard of Trade attaches at British Embassies as being unnecessary and likely to cause friction, bui the Board of Trade .should ha empowered | to send special missions abroad. Tho Board of Trade should remain responsible for the general commercial policy, while tho Department of Overseas Trade should bo charged with tho duty of giving effect thereto. Finally, the diplomatic consular service should make the fullest use of opportunities for consulting British Chambers of Commerce abroad.—A. and N Z Cable.
