OTAGO ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

The monthly meeting- of the- council of the Otago Acclimatisation Society was held last night and was attended by Messrs G. W. M'mtosh (president), Cowie, C. S. Jenkins, Hungerford, Robinson, A. E. Jenkins, Black, and J. R Wilson. The Game Committee recommended that a deputation wait upon a Minister of the Orown as soon as possible to present the needs of the deer forests, and ask for financial assistance in the direofcion of culling. The committee recommended that a permit bo issued to Mr D. Urquhart (Iliiwea Flat) to shoot hinds for meat at Timaru Creek and Long Valley Creek ;aieo that a permit bo issued to Mr H. M. Siackay (riawea. Fiat) to shoot deer for meat, up to 'J/jmaru Creek. The committee recommended that an application be made to Alexandra and Roxburgh as to supplying 20 pairs of quail for tho AVaitaki Society, and that if the birds could not bo obtained from those, localities mentioned permission bo granted the Waitaki Society to g-et some birds in the Otago Society's district, end that the Waitaki Society be informed, by way of suggestion, that tho quail could probably bo got cheaper from trie Nelson Society. Mr T. A. Gillespie (HunteF Valley) had written that he had shot 30 hinds and 12 stags on his permit. In connection with an inquiry from the Whangarci Society as to the cost of black opossums, the committee recommended that a. copy of the letter be sent to Mr T. Telford (Otanomomo), and that he be asked if he had any objection to the Otago Society getting some opossums from his property.—Adopted. Tne Angling- Committee recommended that 5000 or 7000 of the brown trout ova at Clinton be placed in/Lake Hawea, the ova to. be hatched at Pembroke. The North -Canterbury Society had written, stating that it was unable to supply a prioe for English fish tags, and had asked to have forwarded to it any of the lijh tags being made locally. It vv ? a3 recommended that a specimen tag be forwarded. The committee recommended further that taga bo put on some of the fish in the Leith, the Waikouaiti River, and Lako Hawea. The Department of Internal Aiiairs, Wellington, had forwarded warrants of the appointments of Messrs Tait and Hiddleston, of Mosgiol, as rangers and officers. The inspector of police- at Invercargill had replied as to complaints regarding depredations among- trout at Pembroke, that the complaint would rcceivo immediate attention. * The committee recommended that Mr G. K. Graham (Palmerston) be thanked for his offer to arrange for a meeting of anglers to consider an eel-catching competition. Tho committee recommended that 6500 two-year-old' trout at the hatchery be .liberated as follow: —Tomahawk Lagoon, 1000 Loch Leren, 500 Blagdon, 500 brown; Waikouaiti River, 500 Loch Leven, 250 Blagdon; Pomahaka, 800 Loch Leven, 250 Blagdon; Mimihau, 700 brown trout; Waipahi, 500 brown trout; Wyndham, 500 brown trout; Waitati, 450 Scotch burn trout; Evansdalc, 300 Scotch burn trout; Otaraia, 250 Scotch burn trout.—Adopted. The Finance Committee recommended the payment of accounts amounting to £81 16s 3d. There was a cred'it balance of £57 8s 3d, but out of that two small accounts and a contingent liability of £15 for rearing boxes had to be paid. There was about £600 on fixed deposit.—TKe Chairman mentioned that it had been recommended that £100 be expended on the culling contract at Hunter Valley. They expected to set this back from this season's licenses. —Tho report was adopted. It was resolved. that the season for line fishing in Lake Hawea and creeks flowing into it be opened on November 1. An expression of sympathy was passed to Mr Black over the loss ho has recently sustained in the death of his sister.
