SURGICAL TREATMENT OF SOLDIERS.
SIR JAMES ALLEN'S ASSURANCES. TRIBUTE TO. MEDICAL MEN. (Pea Uhitbd Pases Association.) CHitISTCHURCH, June 22. In, a speech at the opening' of the new military wards at Cnristcnurch- Hospital yesterday, Sir Jas. Allen paid a higii tribute to the medical officers w-ho are attending to returned men, pointing out that they were giving up a great deai to remain with the Defence Department. They want, Sir Jas. Allen, said, to be abb to build up their civil practice, but unfortunately we can't let them go. The question, of pay and other emoluments is raider consideration at the present moment, and I hope au improvement will be made in regard to their pay. I hope aleo that before long the Directorgeneral of Medical Services will be able to allow eoroo of them to have part-time service with us and other part of their time to re-establish themselves in civil practice. Sir Jas. Alien remarked that, with four ortbopsedao centres (Christchurch, Dunedan Trentham, and Auckland), he hoped Sur-geon-general M'Gavin would be able to agree that, -as fax as could be foreseen, sufficient. orthopaedic provision had been made in Now Zealand. "If that is not enough," continued Sir James Alien, "then, I have publicly to state that the department will not slacken its efforts if further provision is required."
