INFECTIOUS DISEASES
ACCOMMODATION FOR PATIENTS. (Pbjh Ujhtsd Paces AasooiATtou.) _ CHBISTCHiroOH, Juno 21. Information received by the Hon. G. W. Russell to-day shows thai during the week onded June 16 12 cases of lethargic encephalitis were reported in New Zealand, four were in the North Island and eight in the South Island. Cases in other districts reported during that week were: Diphtheria, 98 (SO in the North Island, 68 in tho South Island); influenza, 32. Improvements are in hand on Quail Island, m Lyttelton Harbour/ to deal with cases of infectious diseases on coastal vessels to Lyttelton, which is not usually made the first port of call for ocean-going vessels, and if any arrive there with influenza on board the vessel' will be sent to Wellington for quarantine. The Health Department feels that it is not necessary to have more than two large fully-equipped quarantine stations in the dominion. The new buildings at Auckland wiE enable the station thero to accommodate 700 persons, and tho Wellington station, when all arrangements are completed, will accommodate the same number.
