POLICE OFFICERS' PAY

SUBSTANTIAL INCREASES GRANTED. (Peb United Peess' Association.) WELLINGTON, June 22. In a statement in regard to police officers' pay, the Minister of Justice (the Hon T M. Wilford) summarised the increases authorised in respect of senior officers. The four superintendents have been granted an increase of £40 per annum each, the eight inspectors a similar increase, while the subinspectors and senior sergeants have been granted that scale of increase which relatively places them in a fair position as regards the branches of the service to which increases have already been made. The house allowance of uniformed sergeants and constables has recently been increaeed to £39 per annum, and the same increase has been granted to certain senior sergeants, detective sergeants, and detectives. The total cost of the increases is estimated at between £4000 and £5000, and this, with £22,000 per annum formerly granted to sergeants and constables, -wall bring the annual increased cost to the taxpayer to between £26,000 and £27,000 per annum.
