ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

(Psa Umited Pasaa Association.) AUCKLAND, January 26. During the voyage of the Niagara from Sydney a passenger named John Boyd Evitt disappeared the. night before the ship arrived at Auckland. Evitt was a married man and a gunsmith, of Sydney. He was coming to visit relatives in Auckland.

WELLINGTON, January 25. A somewhat serious accident occurred at Lambton Quay Station this morning. Edmund Adams, a married man, was doing some work about .one of the gas cylinders used for the lighting of the railway carriages, when some gas became ignited, and he was severely burned about his head and arms. After he had received first aid he was removed to the hospital. Stanley Godfrey, aged 19 years, who was accidentally shot in the back while rabbitshooting at Plimmerton last Sunday week, died in the hospital to-day. WAITARA, January 25. The oil launch Mahoe was washed up on a reef. Captain Roberts was drowned while essaying to . swim ashore. The engineer (Jamieson) was shut up in the engine-room, where presumably he was suffocated. His body was recovered this morning, and the captain's body was washed ashore. CSHRISTCHURCH, January 25. John Brown, aged 46 years, employed as a storeman, was found hanging from a beam in a city warehouse last night. It appeared deceased met with misfortune during the influenza epidemic. He lost his wife and son, his wife's father, and two brothers-in-law. He nursed his relatives through their illnesses, since which he had shown signs of melancholy. The coroner recorded a verdict of suicide by hanging during a fit of melancholy, consequent on severe domestic affliction. A boy named Collister, aged four years, was drowned at the boating stage at Kaiapoi this morning. A child of three years, named James Weir, whose parents reside at 58 Maclaggan street, was admitted to the Hospital yesterday suffering from burns and shock. It appears that the boy got up during the night and lit a candle, which set fire to his clothes. His injuries are not very serious.
