TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL

The engineer reports that during , the month, a considerable part of the men's time was occupied in cleaning , ditches and drains at the time of the epidemic, the work being carried out in tho interest of public health. So far a3 he knows thero is not now an insanitary ditch or water-table in the county, but many instances of pollution were brought under notice which will doubtless occur again unless action is taken against the offenders. Ordinary county work was interrupted for a few weeks, and several of the men were either laid up or were _ granted leave to attend to their families. None of the workmen employed in oleaning-up work was in any way affected. The council's instructions regarding, the payment of wag-es for the time the men -were off work through sickness are asked for. The ■contracts for the delivery of 350 tons of metal on Dan Miller's road and for the delivery of 410 tons on Centre road, South Taicri, are completed. No fresh contracts have been advertised this month. The output from the Mbsgiel quarry since last report is 807 tons. The metal stored at the depot is 200 tons and tho_ spanls quarried at the face 100. yards. It is proposed to crush all spauls quarried and clean the quarry up, bo that the overburden may be stripped for a distance back, thrown over into tho quarry, and then carted away. After the New Year, unless the council has other instructions, the quarry squad will bo shifted to Whare Slat to crush tho boulders for the road from Irishman's corner to the schoolhouse. A suggestion was made that the fine gravel from the quarry at tho school should be used instead of the metal. It certainly •would £o mutch further, and give a good surface in shorter time, and this is a matter on-which direction is asked. There are some .parts of the road where any gravel • covering will periodically be scoured by stream overflow. The following works have been carried out by day labour:—North Taieri: Blinding metal on Flagstaff road, regrading metal on Gordon road, repairs to Long's Creek bridge and the Black bridge. East Taieri: Metalling Mosgiel Junction to Breakneck, clearing. Silverside ditch, surfacing Hardy's township, and grading footpath on Gladstone road. Kaikorai Riding: Removing high sides from tho Green Island to Kaikorai Mouth road. Otokio, Ridings Formation Bedford parade, Brighton, clearing ditches at Allanton and Brighton. ■Notices havo been posted limiting traffic on the bridgo over Taieri at Otokia. Outram Riding: Formation of approach to West Taien bridge, clearing ditch at the school, Momona, spreading and blinding metal, and the annual surfacing of Outram township streets. Maungatua: Spreading and blinding metal on Centre road, metal repairs to Riverbank road, and formation of Hall 6treet, Berwick. Deep Stream: Surfacing , of Mount Allan road and repairs to washout at Deep Stream. Strath-Taiori: Grading and gravelling Centre road at Kirkland's, grading the back road from Spratt's to GLadbrook, formation and gravelling Graham's road, Ntm-puna, clearing Centre toaa diitch from HalTs oorr.er to factory, and general clean up of Middlemarch township. An effort will be made to attend to the following works before tho end of the year:—Repairs to potholes on Gordon 'road, between jsilverstream bridge and Fivo roads corner, and also to potholes on -die Kaikorai lagoon straight, spreading ashes on Gladstone road footpath, blinding metal between Danger Point and Coach and Horses, gravelling of Bedford parade, and gravel repairs to roods about Middlemarch township.
