THE COPPER TRAIL.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —We have had this feature of Red Cross work brought very prominently before us lately. r lhe latest joke in connection with the effort is worth the telling. A firm of drapers sent up to the workroom a noatly typewritten list with every girl's name upon it, with a request, to fill in their donations to the above fund. The first lassie, with more wit than 'wealth, put opposite her name the words "my war bonus." The joke lies in tho fact that the firm pays no war bonus. The dressmaking apprentices for tho first 12 months are paid the magnificent salary of 5s per week, and get a week's or 4 * fortnight's holiday occasionally. Since the pay is so liberal, they get nothing during the enforced holidays. Seriously, however, how can any girl be brought up respectably on such a beggarly pittance? Hie prices for making up dresses and hats are constantly on the up-grade. Who pockets the increase? The wonder to mo is that girls have suffered in silcncc so long. Why do they not strike, as coal, miners, .policemen, wharf labourers, and seamen do? If this is not "sweating" I should like to know tho meaning of the word.—l am. etc., Father of Seven". Dunedin, September 16.

A Press Association cable messago from Melbourne states that the V.A.T.O. has distributed a further £7900 to the patriotic funds, making a total of £48,000.

For all complaints of tho Throat, Lungs, or Bronchial Tubes TTJSSICURA is the sovereign remedy. Is 6d and 2s 6d.
