DUNEDIN HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING. Tho tiiirty-seveutu annual meeting of tile Duiicdin iiuiLioiutui-ji BiOClte,y Wiib liolu Wot mgiu. iiiu pi-uaiueut (±Vir jj. £j. mm,) Vciipieu til© cuau-, a-ml lucre was a »ooU actumauoo oi members. in mown- ujo adoption of the annual report., tuc president ;;uid the committee nun to carry on under somewhat disauvantageuas circumstances oil account 01 tliu war diu lie was sure members would agree witu inm that the committee iuui done its best to conserve tile Inuuicea oi the society and at the same tune auvuuoe its educational aspects. The .society waa not out to make money; l>ut wiine it was nam up against uio present conditions iio thought tno coininittee nngat be congratulated on the state 01 it« existing financial position, thougn it might not be as good as it iis<i been, it was, however, better for them to use their fluids in disseminating iniormatioii and thus educating the people 011 horticultural matters than 111 building up big bank balances.—(Hear, near.) iiio committee had arranged a series of lectures ior this winter, and iio was sure tnese would prove oi interest. The membership of the society had a slight shrinkage during tho year, but this could be accounted for by the absence of a number of thsir members who luui jroiio on active service. Last year the membership stood at 461 and this year is was 450. No doubt the membership would continue to shrink as the married men were called up; but if all put their shoulders to tho wheel he was sure they would bo able to keep -up their nunierical strength. Tho committee had worked very harmoniously together during tho year, and taking it all round he was quite satisfied that the judging had been uniformlygood and that competitors had been very well satisfied. It had been said they should introduce judges outside Otago altogether. The society had done that in tho past when the fin.uices woro stronger; but ho had no doubt that the local judges had earned quite as pood a reputation as tho imported article. —(Hear, hear.) Mr G. Errington seconded tho motion, which was carried unanimously. On tho motion of Sir A. It. Low, it was decided that members should be granted the full financial privileges of the sociaty while they were on active sorvicc. The oloction of oSios-bcarers resulted as follows:—President, Mr B. S. Invin (reelected); vice-presidents : Messrs It. Nichol, A. Millar, T. Scott (re-elected), D. Lam.::eh! James Nelson (four other members were nominated); hon. treasurer, Mr G. Errinirton (re-elected): hon. auditor, Mr W. G. Piokard. A committee of 18 members o-id a ladies' committee of six v.'cro appointed.
