LORD JELLICOE'S RETIREMENT.
Lord Jellicoc's future is discusscd in the February issue of Tho Navy, a copy of which has been received by Mr C. W. Palmer, formerly secretary of the Wellington branch of tho Navy League. In expressing regret that there should be any delay ill dealing with tho matter, the journal says: "It seems to us inconceivable on tho part of Ills Majesty's Ministers if they allow 60 eminent a naval ofliccr to be detached from active and definite association with war organisation. On the ground of his services in tho war, which arc incalculable; on tho_ ground of his experience as a naval administrator, -which is unrivalled; on the ground of his essential qualities, as a fight in <_r sailor and a wise strategist, and. indeed, on every ground of reason, coininon-sense, and national necessity, he should be utilised in a position where his mature judgment and trained counsel shall exercise their : nflucnce in preventing the destmct : on of human libertv." After outlining Lord .Tellieoo's career The Navy concludes; "In the light of t.his record. the whole of which is still vividlv in the puhlic memory, it would in our view be •i national misfortune that an olTioer who oon render peculiarly needed help to a Government and porn>lo face to face "with a life and dentil struggle should rust in idleness or should be assigned nominal duties of a petty and ineffective character. Mihon's tribute to Howe of ' the utmost of skill, tho utmost of riatirnco, t.ho utmost of poreistoiHM,' may well apply to Lord Jolliooe."
