NEW ZEALAND BOWLING ASSOCIATION.

PATRIOTIC TOURNAMENT.

Tho bowling tournamont inaugurated by tho New Zealand Dominion Bowling Association for patriotic purposes was continued yesterday, play being confined to tho Dunediu Green. A further stage was made with tlie ltink tournament groen winners and a few othere eligible mooting iu friendly contest. As tho issues become narrowed down tho interest of tho spectators J and the keenness of tho players increase. No one in tho crowd that lined 'tho Dunedin Bowling Club's green yesterday afternoon could fail to notice that there was a tenseness among the players. The weather was perfect for bowling purposes right throughout tho day. Tho final struggles in tho Rink tournament aro now within sight, though several games havo yet to be played before finality is reached. With a keen green, keen players, an absence of wind, and a determination to win, many good games wero witnessed. A few among them may bo selected, eomo showing in a remarkable manner tho vicissitudes of bowls, in tho gamo between Walker and Smcllio a development at the seventh end gavo it to Walker, and at tho fourteenth end a 4 was added. Green Island's scoring card showed two successive 4's at the twentieth and twenty-first ends, before which the ecores wero 29—12. Tho gamo between C. R. Smith and Noble was remarkable for 'the fact that tho lattor never had the luck to get beyond scoring singles. Colvillo and Gruy tied on tho sixteenth head, tho deciding end going to Gray. A wonderful recovery, though a lose resulted, occurred in tho finish between Watts and Gray, the Kelburn Club, according to tho card, getting 5 and 6 in tho last two ends. Previously Kelburn had scored only throo singles. It was a fairly close fight between Watts and Wylie. Johnson got a big lead on Fastier at the twelfth end. tho scores then being 17—5, but tho Caversham rink played up piuckily, and finished only 8 down after all. Parsons —who acted as skipper for Casey'e team (Ponsonby), Casey having had to leave Dunedin—went off with a big jump from Watts, and put 11 together before tho Otago skip started operations. A vigorous protest in tho shape of 4 made matters look better, but tho defeat was a pretty bad one, though lessened by two s's at tho end. Fraser did some heavy scoring against Bailey, included in his score being 5 got at tho fourteenth end. It was a very tight " go" between Fraser and Smellie, the teams tieing at the twenty-first enu. Fastier was apparently beaten by Noble and his CTew at the eighteenth head, when) the seoro stood 26—5, but 'the Caversham team made ono of thoso recoveries understood by bowlers, and finished only 10 down. In the final rounds one of the mosfc Interesting games was that played by Frassr against Walker. At the eighth end tho score stood level, but for tho next .seven heads tho Ponsonby team hung on to tho mat, and had run vip a total of 24-, to which a single was added before tho end was reached. Fraser camo in the last few heads, but finishod 6 down. The scoring was light in the gamo Watts v. Colville, and was made up mostly of singles. Johnson and Noblo made an even thing of it up to tho eleventh end, after which tho (former forged steadily ahead. Tho gamo between Smcllio and ■Bailey -was very evenly contested, and much tho same thing occurred in tho case of Gray and Wylio. C R. Smith and Fastier had a very "tough fight, and it looked at one stage as if tho former was going to suffer defeat. A 2 and two 3's, however, placed him ahead, and at the end of tho twentieth head the score was level. The final end was watched with great interest, and was won with Smith's last bowl.
