CYRIL MAUDE SEASON
The box plans for the Cyril Maude season will bo opened at tho JJristol to-morrow morning. iNo event oi greater importance is sciieuulcd tor tho local theatrical season than tho appearance at His Majesty's 'ih.outre on Monday of England's most noted character actor, Mr Cyril Maude, in his internationally succcssful melodramatic comedy "Grumpy." The occasion will bo the lirst time on which Mr Maude has visited this- city. "Grumpy" is a melodramatic comedy, with tho comedy element strongly in tho ascendant, but offering plenty of thrills, but never a tear. Tho play was written by Horace Ilodges and T. \vigney Peroyval. The central character is that of Andrew Bullivant, a retired criminal lawyer of London, known to his household and intimates as "Grumpy," a sobriquet bestowed upon him by his great-granddaughter Virginia because ho is testy and childish and fidgety, constantly heckling those who serve him, but withal deserving the nickname of endearment, as his ill-naturo is never more than skin deep, and beneath it all lies tho warmest heart and the most gently humorous disposition in all tho land. The story discovers him, at the age of 83, domiciled in a charming English country home, where ho "is enjoying a quiet existence, quite to his liking. Suddenly all of his former shrewdness is colled for to solve tho mystery surrounding tho theft of a 450,000<1011ar diamond, which is stolen from his f~ /ourito nephew during tho sojourn of the latter in "Grumpy's" house. The astuteness with which tho octogenarian, jumping into the situation and following it rapidly to the end, runs dovyn all clues and unravels all of the perplexing knots of evidence makes four interesting acts, and unfolds a novel detective story. Tho character has unique charm, and is one of tho sweetest and most lovable that has over been given to the stage, and with the masterly impersonation of ago, showing all of its eccentricities and whimsicalities supplied by Mr Maude, it is a classic. "Grumpy" wll be played for the first fivo nights. On Saturday weok Mr Cyril Maudo will bo seen as Eocles in a production of T. W. Robertson's fine comedy "Casto."
