Constable Phillins, who has been stationed at Orepuki for some years, has been transferred to Middlernarch.
A Press Association message states that the. Auckland Presbytery has nominated tho Rev. W. Gray Dixon as Moderator of the General Assembly.
Tho death occurred last week, at his residisneo, 47 Vivian street, Wellington, of Mr llobert Quee, who arrived with his parents in Dunedin from Australia about the year 1861. During his residence here he waa on board tho Pride of the Yarra when she was sunk by collision on her way from Port Chalmers to Dunedin. Ho arrived in Wellington in 1863, and resided there until his death.
One of the Union Steam Ship Company's most capable officers, Captain J. Morrison, recently vacated his command. He was responsible for the conveyance of troops between New Zealand and Samoa at the beginning of the war, and won the esteem of all who camo in touch .with him. The officers of the garrison at Samoa presented Captain Morrison with a framed illuminated address as a mark of their esteem and to recognise his services rendered to the garrison. The work is a fine example of illumination, the view of Apia Harbour being exceptionally good. , Second Lieutenant John Wilkio Hinton, M.Sc, who is the nominee of the University of Otago for this year's Rhodes Scholarship, is an old boy of the Southland Boys' High, School. He entered this school in 1907, and was in attendance till the close of 1912, being the holder, during the later years of his stay, of a senior board scholarship. On leaving school Lieutenant Hinton, who is a son of Mr and Mrs Hinton, of Spey street, Invercargill, gained a University bursary and the Beverly Entrance Scholarship (x> the Otago University, where he studied until the end of last year, graduating as M.Se., with double honours. In 1915 ho was awarded the Senior Scholarship of the "University of New Zealand in electricity, and was appointed demonstrator 'to the profesvsor of physics afc the Otago University. Then last year, while he was holding tho degree of B.Sc., he was put forward as one of the Otago candidates for the two Rhodes' Scholarships available, but was not successful. His University coarse completed, Mr Hinton proceeded to camp in February last, a,nd after passing through his non-coms, training, topped his reinforcement in the examination for first commission, and was drafted with his star to the Thirty-second Reinforcements. In athletio justification of his scholarship nomination, Lieutenant Hinton can claim his S.B.H.S. cricket cap, gained in 1912, while he was 'secretary of both tho tennis and cricket clubs in' the same year, besides being senior , sergeant of .the School Cadet Corps. A well-known Milton personality, Mr William Wilkio Taylor, passed away last week after a lengthy illness. The deceased gentleman, who was 80 years of age, was a native of Dunfermline, Fifeshire. Ho came to New Zealand in tho ship Lady Raglan in 1862. iuid for a few years worked in Dunedin at his trade as'a painter and decorator. About 1870 ho eommericed business in Milton, but prior to his removal there he married Miss Lilias Oswald, of Dimedin. During his younger days Mr Taylor took a keen interest in all public affairs. He was a 'borough councilor for 24 years, and Mayor of Milton in 1387 (Queen Victoria's jubilee year). Other public activities included a keen interest in the Bruce Building Sooiety for 40 yeArs, as a committee man ajxJ vicepresident, a prominent position in Court Bruce, A.0.F., for 47 and he was also connected with Lodge St. John, Milton, of which he was a Past Master. Old bowlers will also remember his association with the pastime at different tournaments and in friendly games. Ho leaves a widow, ono son, and four daughters.
