EMPIRE THEATRE

The dainty Etfle Marguerite dark was presented in quite a new role as the leading lady in "The Fortunes of Fifi," the chief subject on the change of programme submitted yesterday at the Empire Theatre. Miss Clark will be favourably remembered in "Snow White" recently presented_ at this theatre, and to compare "Snow White" with "Fifi" is to wonder at .the little lady's astonishing versatility. She is first seen as a delightful little pierretto in a email French provincial play, which, after a patient trial, proves a failure. At the point where Fill's enthusiasm sinks to low ebb a veteran of Napoleonic wars named Cartouche, who had turned actor when his wounds precluded the possibility of bis following- hia general, intervenes. The veteran takes-an interest in the young actressand succeeds m placing her in a more prosperous position. Eventually Fifi become the possessor of a fortune, squanders it injudiciously, but at tho fame time does not allow her extravagant proclivities td obliterate hor sentiment in the cause of charity. For tho purpose of education she i 3 placed in the home of a young attorney, but her coquettish and impish inclinations bring about disaster to the lawyer's sentimental overture??, and her dismissal from tho household. She returns to her profession, however, and finally winds up by professing her affection for her old benefactor, but she is better advised by the old man'p common sense. She- eventually finds and acts upon an inspiration of her own, bringing about a happy conclusion to an adventurous career. The other films are ah excellent travelogue entitled "On tho Banks of tho Perone," and a laughable Bray cartoon.
