COMMERCIAL

Dauy Times Office, Saturday morning . Ihcro is hkely to be a scarcity oi nerruaga, owuig to the non-arrival o[ shipments and the fact that the high cost oi- salmon ii&s turned the duuaaud more to horrings . Stocks oi cheese are practically exhausted *nd it is difficult to secure further supplies in Otago. The demand from the North island is making the position more acute. ine local manufacturers of wax candles are short of stocks, a shortage of raw material affecting their output. The manufacturers of lino's fruit salt arp now cutting down all the orders received. Salt is getting into small compass,.stocks having been bought up for shipment to Australia. \ Full supplies of benzine will be available during the coming week. Canned rabbits are now being offered on the local market at 16s 9d per dozen tins It is announced that the British Government has prohibited the use of cereals in " tho manufacture of gin. This article is not now being distilled. No British steamers are allowed to load any cargo from Holland except foodstuffs. Supplies of gin from this quarter have to be carried in Dutch steamers. Hydroline soap is quoted at 34s per cwt. paper is. quoted at 9s per. box. Norton's egg preservative is again available. Lane's Medicine Company is unable to cope with the demand for its emulsion, con- . eeyuent on the. scarcity of bottles brought about by tho Sydney strike. , Tacks are in short supply. The strike in Austrnl.a is causing a ' shortage _in such lines as rice, macaroni, vermicelli, and several other lines usually , transhipped at Sydney for New Zealand porta. <t» • ■ LONDON MARKETS. (Fh6u Oub Own Correspondent.) • _. '• OAMARU, August 25. Tho last week has been almost barren of business in tho grain and produce market. No wheat has been forthcoming, and the only transaction *in oats was the purchase. of a line of seed Gartons, for which 4s net was given at a country station. A few small lots of table potatoes have changed hands at £3, net on trucke, while a little bettor pree was given for one line of prime Dp-to-Dates. The stock market is passing through a quiet stage. The 'near approach of lambing precludes the removal of breeding ewes, and business in lambs for forward delivery has come to a halt. Salo have not been mnny,_ nor of any particular moment. The following aro the prices: Mixed four and six-tooth ewes, 445; full-mouthed crossbred ewre, 33e 6d; owe hoggets, 345; mixed sex hoggets, 30s 9d; threp-nuartcrbred hoggets, in equal proportions ol sexes, 30s; small three-quarterbred lambs, ewes predominating, 28s 6d; fat wethers, t,H-$ ; fat and forward wethors, 363 6d; store wethers, 345. There has hoon voiy little doing in eattlo. A line of mixed-sex store cnttlp was sold nt £8 10s. but, on the other hand, in oertain district* somo of tho farmers are compelled to pur cliuso chaff, while contractors and flax mil) ore are forced to securo supplies from r<> Jjjoto districts or from town merchants. This tends to a hardening of prices. The inquiry for rye grass still holds good from tho north, 321b seed being readily saleable at 7s 3d per bushel net, ox store InvercfirgilL ' It js evident that thero is nothing worth speaking of left in growers' hands, they having accepted tho good prioes offering earlier in the year. Stocks in merchants' hands do not appear to be anything more than is required for tho local domand. Italian rye grase, though inquired for, lias rather a downward tendency as far as local figures are concerned, as a good deal of seed is offering from Canterbury at lower figures than local merchants aro prepared to accept. I heard of one transaction in hemp having taken place this week at £57 a ton on trucks for high fair This is beyond merchants' ideas of values, especially so seeing that the risk of obtaining shipping facilities is now oven grcator than it has been for many months. ' In stock, business continues good, and tho market is firm with very little- variation from last's week's prices. All classes of 6tore cattle are in good demand, and a large number aro changing hands. In store sheep there is not a groat number coming forward, but all offered are readily sold at current rates., At tho Wallacetown weekly sale on Wednesday there was a large yarding of store cattle, dairy cows being well represented, and selling up to £16. There was also a large entry of calves, the demand for which slackened as the sale pro gressed, so that prices eased slightly on those of last week. Thero was a good entry of fat cattle, and some really good quality 6tuff was forward, which met with keen competition. In fat sheep there was a fair entry, mainly of wethers, the quality of which was good, and the prices realised were practically equal to those of the previous week.

CENTRAL i PRODUCE MART. '

The Central Produce, Mart, Ltd., report: During the week wo have experienced a good demand for all lines of fruit, high priots ruling.
