PATRIOTIC COLLECTORS

SPECIAL FUND SUGGESTED FOR THE TAIERI. The administration o-f patriotic funds was discussed by _ tho Taicri County Council yesterday at ifca monthly meeting. Representatives of the East Taicri patriotio institutions explained to tho council that they had collected a good sum in tho district, but that in the coureo of their collecting they had foT.mil a general wish that a fund bo created, to be called the Tiueri I'atriotio Fund, administered by, say, tho County Council, and all money raised locally to bo kept within tho district. Before handing over tho money collected to tho Obago fund, the deputation wished to know tho opinion of the council.

A general discussion followed, in which it was explained that there wore already two or three patriotic funds within tho Taieri, out of which a sum was paid to tho Otago fund, and tho balance spent on local roquiremc-jnte. 'Hie opinion was also voiced that parochial funds would bo worse than the present general fund. The secretary of the Taicri Patriotic Society was also present, and said ho thought that beforo anything was done his society shouM bo approached It consisted of representatives of almost all looa.l bodies, societies, committees, and religious denominations within tho Taieri. ' Shortly after tho establishment of tho Otago General this society handed over all funds, but did not disband, in case of an emer,'gcnoy arising. It was eventually suggested that the secretary call together the members of tho society and have tho matter discussed. Conditions might have altered, though at tho t.ime tho eooiptv was formed all wore agreed that a Taieri Patriotio Fund would not be advisable. This oourso was agreed to.
