JAPANESE WARMLY WELCOMED
GERMAN AIMS IN SOUTH AMERICA.

NEW YORK, August 23. The Japanese mission had a very warm reception. The members pointed out that Japan was willing to assume a larger share in the war.
Mr i Gerard, in the course of a speech, said: " Among the most important of the German objectives are the States of Rio Grande Du Sul (adjoining Uruguay) and Sao Paulo (inland from' Rio de Janeiro), in Southern Brazil, where for a decade 400,000 German reservists have been waiting for ' Der Tag.' Germany is most anxious to secure a South American empire." BELGIAN MISSION. WARNING AGAINST PREMATURE PEACE.
v WASHINGTON, August 23. Mr Theodore Roosevelt, addressing the Belgian mission, said that an inconclusive peace was the greatest menace to civilisation. Peace could not be accepted unless its-.terms gave a. very heavy indemnity to Belgium.
