AUCKLAND, August 22. A restaurant keeper named Henry Michaels was fined the minimum penalty of £20 and an .-mount usually known as a war bonus, amounting to £5, for betting within view of Queen street.
° WELLINGTON, August 22. In the Magistrate's Court, Robert Irwin Aleaclcm, alias M'Lean. was charged on three informations, with forging cheques for sums totalling £49. and with obtaining goods and money therefor from tradesmen The accused was committed for trial Moaelem was also charged' with obtaining timber valued at £34 14s from Odlin and Co. by false pretences. The timber was afterwards sold by the accused to a builder at Lyall Bay. The accuscd pleaded trui'lty and was committed to the Supremo Court for sentence.
