STBAMEB IN DIFFICULTIES.

BUEFETED ffOR THREE DAYS. (Pes United Pbess Association.) AUCKLAND, August 21. A large steamer, which left New Zealand on August 8. met the full force of an easterly gale, and for three days was buffeted about, being sometimes broadside-on. This waa due to the water putting out some of the fire*. The pumps were started, but became choked, and soon the water rose above the stokehold plates, and prevented the firemen from keeping up the fires. The steamer by this time had lost headway, and kept falling into the trough of the sea. Feara were entertained for the vessel's safety, but after three days' hard work the crew and the engine-room staff overcame the difficulty.

The John will sail to-day for Oamaru, Timaru, Wellington, and Wanganui The Kanaka is fixed to sail to-day tor Grevmouth to load for Dunedin. .The Tarawera was expected to sail from Pieton last night for Auckland _The Storm is due here to-morrow, and is timed to sail the same day for Timaru, Pieton, and Wanganui. The Kittawa is fixed to sail from Napier to-morrow for Westport to load for Bluff. The Monowai was expected to leave Napier last evening for Gisborne and Auckland, whence she will sail for Wellington, Lyttelfcon, and Dunedin. The Huddart-Parker steamer Wimmera, which at present is engaged in the New Zealand coastal service, is due here to-dav from Auckland, via ports, and is timed to Bail to-morrow on the return voyage.
