A German official message says: — " There has been, a revival of fighting in te neighbourhood of Dvinsk, Smorgon, and. Brody, and stubborn fighting south-east-ward of Czernovitz. We penetrated the enemy's lines at several points, and stormed several heights between theTrotus and Putna "Valleys, despite Rumanian resistance. Wo captured in the past two days oh the Oitoz sector 1400 men. Marshal ivon Mackensen forced a crossing on the Susita on a wide front. Bitter counterattacks failed with the heaviest losses. A Russian ofiicial message says:— " Dense enemy waves attacked our positions in the direction of Brody and in the region of the villages of Dub and Zarkov. A battle is progressing. We beat off the enemy southward of the Pruth River, one of our battalions forcing its way into the village of Lukovica, "where we compelled the enemy to retire. We have regained the heights which we lost on Wednesday south of Wammamy. " The enemy forced the Rumanians to retire southwest of Mona." A, Jiater repori states:—"An pnemy partial offensive m the direction of Brody was a complete failure. He was everywhere repulsed with great losses. We repelled attacks in the Sereth and Suchava Valleys. Stubborn battles were fought south-west of Ocna. The Rumanians were forced to retire five versts. The enemy developed an offensive west of the FocsaniMereshestchi railway, and compelled us to retire across the Suchitza. We repelled attacks eastward of the railway. A battle is progressing. " Counter-attacks last evening enabled ns to recross in places on the south bank of the Suchitza." MORALE OF THE ARMY. HOPEFUL INDICATIONS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. PETROGRAD, August 10. (Received Aug. 12, at 5.5 p.m.) Reports from headquarters state that there is a noticeable regeneration in the army. It is believed that discipline will soon be restored to a normal state. REPORT FROM RUMANIA. ENEMY LOSSES HEAVY. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association and Reuter. LONDON, August 10. (Received Aug. 12, at 5.5 p.m.) ■in Romanian communique, dated August 10, reports that the Russo-Rumanians are maintaining their positions in various areas, and are inflicting heavy losses despite repeated prolonged powerful attacks, accompanied by asphyxiating gas.
