CITY COUNCIL.
TIIO first mcoi.ing of the nowjy elected City Council, held last night, was atteciticcl by ills Worship the Mayor (Mr J. i Crs Wilson, Hancock, Macuonald, Sincook, Bradley, Gilkison, Scott, Carroll, Lnnn, Thompson, Taverner, Bcgg, Douglas, Keliett, and Slmcklock. lho principal business on the order paper was the appointment of Standing Committees for the ensuing term, the arrangement of a new Drainage Board, and the authorisation of a Joan of £4560 fo v - the purpose of paying off the City Abattoir Joan of £5000.
The formal declaration of loyalty to tho council was s:gned by tho councillors in alphabetical order andi bv tho Mayor. r ADDRKSS JIY THE MAYOR. [ ' ]Ie Mayor addressed tho council, explaining that at tho present time, and in view of the fact that ho was simply continuing in office, he had deemed it wise not to have the usual installation function, but to begin with an ordinary business meeting-. Ho tendered the citizens his sincere thanks for the high honour 1 they -lad conferred upon him, and he hoped lie need haidly say that ho -would endeavour 111 every way possible to prove himself worthy of their confidence. ll e bore testimony to the good work that was done by the last council. It was itniquc in the u yea i rS ° f ouv Clty civio lifo to have three other local bodies joining the city, and their representatives sitting for a pc-riod of I'months as members of tho City Coiißoil. •though the council was perhaps a jiitle unwieldy on account of its size the numbers had worked together with the snost complete harmony and with tho single idea of doing their best for the city. While speeding, the parting councillors they welcomed the coming ones. ,H 0 was confident that all their new arrivals .vou'id oy honest service and: business ability vooii prove their worth. The coming vev wot'ld bring before them many andi difficult problems. The tragic war might completely alter the conditions of the money market and shake our oommerical fabrin. The Duncdin City Corporation was a huge tradine concern, and conditions that might not materially affcct ordinary . municipalities might most' seriously hamper tho success ol our trading concerns. A : olioy of caution andi careful finance should characterise their actions, s 0 that they micrht not unthinkingly bring extra burdens upon the people. Ho believed that the citizens would .cheerfully support them in any steps they might take if they were sat-'sfied that it would assist our Empire in its hour of trial. _ Let them forget their own persona! theories and sink their special projects for the present, .and have but one aim—win thr war. The city had reason to bo nroud of the magnificent work that its early city fathers did. Throughout its 52 veare of civio government there had- always been men who had been fearless*in their advocacy . ( r, r 'Sht and had guarded and directed tins city and brought it to its present place of honour aud usefulness. Let them com- ' mence tliier new term with a stern purpo-se ■and high resolve to maintain the standard of the past and hand it down not merc'v j unimpaired but strengthened and imiKoved —(Applause.)-Crs Hancock, Sharkloek, and ! jn llson congratulated the Mayor on the honour done him by the citizens, and ass"red him of their loyal support.
