ihe Director of the Dental School (Professor Pickerili) reported that during 1916 the work ot tho Dental School had progressed as normally as possible under the conditions imposed by tho war. There had been live students, in attendance, all studying for the B.D.S. degree. This was one less than tho number they had had for the past few years. Tho clinical work ocrlormed for patients attending the Hospital compared favourably with what had been done in the ;xist. Several members of the honorary staff having received military appointments hod not been available tor clinical teaching- during tho oast year laese included Lieutenant-colonel Hunter, Lieutenant Donaldson and Lieutenant Nicholson. This loss had been met by a rearrangement of the hours of attendance of tno staff and by the director ...aKing over more of the clinical work The teaching of clinical dental surgery would however, be very much facilitated if these* practitioners who gavo up their time to go to tho Hospital could be in some measure remunerated lor tho loss of time thereby incurred. The New Zealand Dental Association the Dental Faculty, and tho Board of Studies had now approved of. a course lor tho certificate of proficiency in dental surgery, and it remained lor the University Senate to sanction it or otherwise,—Received.
Ihe Minister of Defence wrote statin» that since Mr T. D. Adams had voluntarily enlisted ho must proceed to camp with the draft to which Ho was attached. The Chancellor reported that he had appealed against Mr Adams feeing called up.—Mr Stephens said they suggested that tho withdrawal of Mr Adams was contrary to public interest, and that Sir James Allen's attention bo drawn to a regulation published in tho Gazette on January 16. —Dr Church said that it was absurd for men likb Mr Adams and Dr Jack to bo working in the trenches —It was resolved that tho Chancellor be requested to make inquiries as to filling Mr Adams's place. It was further resolved that tho Minister of Munitions be written to as to tho exemption of professors from military service. Dr Watt wrote resigning his University positions as from December 31 last.—Accepted, tho Medical Committee being empowered to appoint a lecturer on anatomy and physiology to massage students. Mrs Bedford wrote stating that there was every probability of Dr Bedford's return being- delayed tor a month or two.— Received, it ibcing mentioned that Dr Bedford was expected to }o in Dunedin in about a week's time. Mr A. Stankevitch wrote offering his ser-. vices as a teacher of Russian.—Received, a reply to bo sent that there was no demand at present for such teaching, but that when tho necessity arose the matter would be considered. Miss Irene Searlo was awarded tho Walter Scott scholarship, and Miss Martha. Smith the Richardson scholarship. The committee recommended Miss M. P. Harty for a bursary in Home Science. It was resolved to offer tho council's hearty congratulations to Major Peter H. Buck, and Lieutenant J. E. Cuthill, mentioned in despatches by General Sir Douglas Haig; also to Captain W. O. Hartgill, on his receiving the- Military Cross.
