News has been received in Wellington of the death m New York, on July 26, of Mr Frederick William Frankland, who for somo yeais held important positions in tho New Zealand Government Insurance Department. Miss Egglcton, a. well-known Southland teacher, who (savs tho Southland Times) for some timo has been on tho teaching staff of tho Boys' Training Farm, Weraroa, has been appointed in chargo of tho Educational Department of tho To Oranga Homo, Chiistchurch. Dr Amos Johnston, junior house surgeon at the Chiistchurch Hospital, has been called up for militaiy sir\ice, arid his'resignation fiom the hospital will take effect fiom the beginning ot ne\t month (6ays tho Press). Tho medical superintendent of tho hospital has arianged for two finalyear students from Ot.igo University to fill the -\acancies on the staff. Mr W. B. Fishei, who was treasurer of tho St. John Ambulance Society in Wellington, and for 20 \ears secretary of the same oiganisation in Otago, is now rcgistiar of Military Home Hospital Reserves of tho Society of St.. John of Jerusalem (writes our London coricspondent). Mrs Fisher, formerly secretary of the Wellington Nursing Guild, is nmsing at King George's Miljtaiy Hospital in London, where the Marchioness of Ripon and other notable peoplo aio working in an honorary capacity. Williams, of Waiapu, who has been well known in ecclesiastical circles in Now Zealand for many years past. lie was born at Pahia. Bay of Islands in 1829, being tho son of tho Right Rev. William Williams, tho firft Bishop of Waiapu. The late Bishop was educated at Sit. John's College, Tajnaki, Auckland, and at the Magdalcno llal!, Oxfoicl. lie obtained his B A degree in 1852, was ordained a deacon year following, and was con-s,-ciated Bishop of his late diocese in 1895. Two years subsequently he was mado an Hon. Doctor of Diunity. He was mishionaiv of tlie Anglican Church Missionary Society at Poveity Bay from 1853 to 1894; Archdeacon of Wni.ipu fiom 1862 to 1894; principal of tho To Rau Maori Theological College, Gisborne. from 1883 to 1894, and a canon of St. John's Cathedral, Napier, from 1889 to 1894 Bishop Williams attended the Lambeth Conference in 1897. He was authoi of "First Lessons in Maori," and editor in part of tho third and fourth editions of Williams', Now Zealand Dictionaiv. He had six sons (including tho Rev. IL W Williams. Aichdeacon of Waiapu), and four daughters.
