BIG GERMAN ATTACK.
HEAVY ENEMY LOSSES. PARIS, April IS. (Received April 18, at 9.30 p.m.) A communique states: x X wo divisions attacked our posi* tions from the Meiise to Douaumont. The waves of assault spread over two kilometres. They encountered our curtain and machine-gun fire, "and were driven back except south of the Chauffour Wood, where they gained a footing in a small salient. There were very heavy enemy losses, especially west of Poivre Hill and the ravine between Poivre Hill and the Haudremont Wood.
