J3o far as shipping business ia concerned this has been a quiet week, and there does not seem to be any great prospect of an Improvement for a few days at least. The . wharves, both at Port Chalmers and Dunedin, bear a somewhat deserted, appearance /at present. The Greymouth bar is not working satisfactorily at present, and vessels which left that port on Tuesday had to be loaded to a draft of less than 16ft. Tho Monowai is due here this morning from Lyttelton, and will sail on Friday for Auckland, via way ports. ; . The Invercargill, which has been repos- . ing for some days on a bank in the In- , vercargill estuary, was expected to be refloated last night, and should arrive here about the end-of the week. The Otaki was to leave Lyttelton at daylight this morning, and ,may, therefore, be expected here early on Friday morning. . She will complete her discharge at this port, and will then be taken over by the New Zealand Shipp.ng Conipany fo» outward ' loading. . ■■■- The 6teamer Tay_ 1, recently purchased by i.tbe Opouri Shipping Company, of Christchurch, to run in conjunction with the Opouri in the timber trade to Lvttelton, is due" at Lyttelton on Good Friday from Hobart, with a cargo of timber. Upon arrival the vessel will be altered to suit the new trade. Captain Dewhurst, at present chief officer of the Opouri, is going to ■ take command of the vessel when she en- : tens the service.

Tho Storm arrrrod here early yesterday morning from Wanganui, via tho usual ports of call, and sailed in the evening on tho return journey. The American scientißo yacht Carnegie was placed in tho Lyttelton dry dock on Monday morning for overhaul. Although the vessel wo 3 last in dock at Brooklyn, New York, about 12 months ago, and sinoe that time has accomplished many thousands of miles of " globe-trotting," her hull, protected below tho water line by copper sheathing, was found to bo completely free of marine growth. Her coat of white paint, too, seemed scarcely scratched, while, so far as a superficial examination showed, only ono piece of copper sheathing was missing. The Carnegie's beautiful lines and smart appearanco Slowed to advantage on the blocks, and a largo number of interested spectators visited tho dock to view her. Tho vessel is much deeper than would bo expected, and tho largo amount of top gear she carries explains her tendency to roll in certain weather. It was expected that she would be floated out of dock yesterday.
