A SHUNTER RUN OYER.
LOST CONFIDENCE IN HIMSELF.
(Peb United Press Association.) CHRIiSTGHURCH, April 7. ; An inquest was held to-day on the body of James Walls, shunter, who was killed > at the Ghristchurch railway station i yesterday. * Mr J. P. Matheson, goods agent, stated that, in his opinion, the accident was due to inadvertence on the part of the unfortunate man. Deceased walked in front of some moving wagons, which knooked • him over. He kept within the rails instead of keeping at the side. Deceased was a healthy and practically "fit" hian. •Witness .knew that deceased had asked to be relieved of shunting duties. , Witness told him he had been engaged as a shunter,.but gave him light work. The department, however, held that, as deceased was engaged as a shunter, and, as he was fit for shunting work, he should do it. Witness told deceased this decision, and deceased agreed to' it. Deceased was- hit by the wagons before he turned round. His foot caught in a switch- Deceased, when witness came up, said to 'witness: "I .told you, Mr Matheson, this shunting would get mo down." Deceased must have lost confidence in' himself. • The coroner returned a verdict that deceased was accidentally killed, being run over by a railway truck.
