THE SUBMARINES
BALTIC FLOTILLA STRENGTHENED. FIVE ADDITIONAL SUBMARINES. COPENHAGEN, November 12. It is believed that five British submarines have reached the Baltic within the last fortnight. ANOTHER STEAMER SUNK. LONDON, November 12. The steamer Rhineland was sunk. One of the crew was saved and 23 are missing. THE FRANCE. SUBMARINE CAPTAIN'S CYNICAL HEARTLESSNESS. ROME, November 12. A cynical incident in connection with the torpedoing of the France by a submarine shelling the transport is that of the German commander calmly kinematographing the scene. ITALIAN STEAMER SUNK. TWENTY-ONE LIVES LOST. ROME, November 13. (Received November 14, at 3.30 p.m.) A submarine sank the Italian steamer Firenga (3960 tons) in the Mediterranean. Six passengers and 15 of the crew are missing. Twenty-seven passengers and 96 of the crew were saved.
SUNK BY SHELL-FIRE. j CREW ABANDON THEIR TOSTS. ROME, November 13. (Received Nov. 14, at 3.30 p.m.) It is semi-officially announced that an Austrian submarine sank the Firenze in the vicinity of Syracuse, when she was steaming towards Port Said. The F'renre's crew, who were mostly Lascars, abandoned their posts when the submarine opened fire. After six boat loads had been lowered the submarine sank the Firenze with shell-fire. GERMAN BOAT RESPONSIBLE. ROME, November 13. (Received Nov. 14, at 5.5 -p.m.) It was a U boat (German) that sank the Ancona, and also the Firenze, though the Austrian flag was flown in each case. ITALY INQUIRING. PROBABLE DECLARATION OF WAR. ROME, November 14. (Received Nov. 15, at 0.5 a.m.) Newspapers state that the Italian authorities have ordered an inquiry into the nationality of the submarine which sank the Ancona. If it was a German boat, Italy will declare war against Germany.
