Staff-captain and Mrs Chard, of the Salvation Army, until recently in South Africa, have been appointed to China. Mre Chard is the only daughter of 'Commissioner Richards, formerly in ; command of New Zealand. 1 A well-known resident of Dunedin—Mr W. B. Vigers—died at his residence, Hope street, yesterday, at _ the age of 57 years. Mr Vigers, who arrived in Dunedin 1880, was born in Hanley, Staffordshire, in 1858. He joined the Manchester and Liverpool District Bank, in which he remained for over six years. Shortly after his arrival in Now Zealand he was appointed accountant in the Colonial Bank at Cambridge, Waikato. Eighteen months later he was transferred to Gore, and after filling many positions in the bank's service he was appointed manager of the. Dunedin branch in 1890. Four years later, oft the retirement of Mr Watson, ho was appointed inspector, and held that position until he was appointed a liquidator of the bank.

A busy timo lies ahead of the Hon. W-i-Fraser (Minister of Public Works). Tonight he will leave Wellington for the couth, and anticipates reaching his own electorate on Wednesday. While there ho will inspect a bridge now in course of erection. Clyde and Queenstown will -be included in his itinerary. Next Monday ho hopes to reach Christcliuroh, where he. has a large amount of departmental business to transact. While there he will attend the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Show. Later he will viait the north.
