COAL-MINING CONFEEENCE. RESTRICTING ABSENTEEISM. LONDON, September 2. The National Conference on the coalmining industry met at the Home Office. Both masters and men agreed that the necessity had not yet arisen to suspend the Eight,. Hours Act, as its suspension -would not Materially increase production. It was agreed, that efforts should be made to restrict absenteeism, and to abolish inequalities in labour conditions in the various districts. AUSTRALIAN ZINC CORPORATION. ACTION AGAINST GERMAN FIRM. MELB.OURNE, September 3. The Zinc Corporation is seeking to recover £41,920 from Aaron Hirsch and Sohn, of Germany, being the balance due before the war.. An application by plaintiffs to allow them to substitute service on the firm's agent was granted. Defendants were notified by means of a registered letter.
The concentrates concerned are now at Port Pirie, S.A., and if judgment is obtained they Could be taken over by the corporation. '
REDUCED HOTEL HOURS

The" hotelkeepers of' Glasgow are converting their houses into something resembling social tea and lunch rooms, where, during prohibited hours, ijonalcoholic drinks are served, besides food. In view of this change efforts were made to remove the ban upon the employment of barmaids, but the magistrates refused to withdraw their inhibition.
SOUTH WALES MINERS. LONDON, September 2. (Received Sept. 3, at 10.20 p.m.) All the miners in South Wales who were-out have resumed work.
