Some Italian soldiers found on Austrian prisoners their commander's message stating that bpth officers and men were physically ' exhausted. The officers have been fighting since July, and are suffering from nervous breakdown. The message states that affairs had reached a crisis owing to their heavy losses.

General Cadorna concludes that this is evidence of moral depression in the Austrian army, and he .urges the Italians to persevere in their efforts to overcome the Austrian resistance, for its continuance is still probable owing to the strength of the enemy's positions.
