ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
Tho police have been advised that John Puterson, labourer, 60 years of age, was found dead in bis hut at Kaihiku yesterday. An inquest will be hold to-day. The Kaitangata correspondent of the Balelutlia Free i'ress reports that Mr John M'Caughern, underviower at Kaitangata No. 1 mine, mot, with a na»ty acoident on Tuesday afternoon. 110 was at tho bottom of ono of tho " dips," when some boxes of coal, • which were being hauled up by a winch, broke away arid ran back down the incline. Mr M'Caughern heard the runaway, and rushed into a " lay-by " to escape tho boxes, and in doing so struck the top of his head violently on the roof. The blow inflicted a bad scalp wound, and ho wan removed to the cottago hospital. From 15 to 20 stitches were required to close the wound, while the loss of blood was also serious. Mr M'Caughern is doing as well as can bo expected. SIGNALMAN'S TRAGIC DEATH. AT TAIAROA HEADS. Tlio body of Robert Wilson, assistant signalman at Taiaroa Heads, was found lying at tho foot of tho cliff near the lighthouse yesterday afternoon in a fearfully mangled condition. So far as can be learned the deceased was missing on Thursday afternoon, and tho police were informed, but although a search jiarty was immediately organised to scour the vicinity, no trace of Wilson could be found until yesterday afternoon, when his remains wore found as 6tated above. The deceased was a married man about 40 ye.-.rs of age, and had been employed at the Heads for about 11 years.
