BOWLING.
EASTER TOURNAMENT.
RINKS COMPETITION
The Easter bowling tournament promoted by tho Dunedin Bowling Centro was commenced ye-sterday morning. The weather was cold and windy, and a light shower fell about 8 o'clock. Fortunately tho day cleared, though it was still cold, with a biting southerly late in tho afternoon, when thero was another light shower. Eighty rinks competed, and to-day, when the Doubles will bo proceeded with, 176 players will meet. At last year's Easter tournament thero were 64 rinks and 144 pairs. The system of play was tho same as last year—-namely, tiiat winners in tho qualifying round played in tho Provincial Rinks and losers in tho City Rinks playing at least three games in tho rinks. This ensured that each rink had at least four games during tho day. The prizes in tho; Provincial Rinks were trophies valued at £10, £6, and £4, and those in the City Rinks were valued at £6 and £4. A start was made on the Dunedin Green at 8 a.m. sharp, notwithstanding that a light rain was falling, and tho weather was cold and. windy. As the day advanced the weather improved somewhat, but was never ao any time 'bowlers' weather. The green in the morning was to be a trifle heavy, but improved as the day wore on, until in the latter part of the afternoon it was playing remarkably well. Before the start of play the umpire (Mr W. Nicolson) announced that the rule as to playing with both feet on tho mat would bo strictly adhered to, and players evidently approved of this by tho applause with which the announcement was received. Subsequently there wero practically no infringements ol this rule, and tho umpire was seldom called upon to decide any dispute. The Caledonian Green was in good order, but the cold wind which blew across the ground upset tho calculations o£ the players to a great extent, as sometimes when an allowance was made for tshn wind, it would momentarily drop, the judgment of tho bowler thus being brought to naught. Despite the' fact that those in charge pushed on the games with all expedition, finality was not reached in either section. Scott's rink played well right through, and did not suffer a defeat.
The Roslyn Green played very -well, notwithstanding the morning rain, which the wind soon dried off. During the day excellent progress was made,_ and as matters stand now in the Provincial Rinks Cooke (4 wins) has to play _ Bremner (4 wins), for green -winner, while in the City Rinks Collinga (3 wins) has to play Fell (3 wins) for green winner. A bitterly cold wind blew across the Caversham Green and made it extremely difficult for the men to play to any advantage, and it could scarcely be said that any of those engaged enjoyed their games. Play ceaied at 6.30 p.m., everyone being glad when the umpire. (Mr C. R. Smith) rang the belL The following are the results: —

OAMARU TOURNAMENT. (Fkou Ode Own Cobbespondimt.l
OAMARUj April 2. . A conspiracy of adverse circumstances has resulted in the annual bowling tournament, inaugurated many years ago by the Phosnix and Meadowbank Clubs, being this year stripped of its glory. The destruction of tho Star and Garter Hotel, with a serious consequent decrease in the previously inadequate accommodation for visiting bowlers, has no doubt been the chief factor in the heavy reduction in tho number of entries, but still there are a fair number of visitors, rinks being present from Ashburton in the north to Invercargill in tho south. With 26 rinks on the list, play was commenced at 8.30 this morning in weather by no means full of promise, a leaden sky boding ill. After a couple of hours rain set in, and at times became so heavy that brief adjournments had to be made. After midday, however, the sun came out, and thereafter little fault oould be found with the conditions. The greens were. in capital order and played well and truly. Some excellent play was shown, most of the games being keenly contested. The following are the results up to the time the evening train left, when some games were still in progress:— CITIZENS' PRIZES. For rinks.
