MINING.

The Rise and Shine No. 1 dredgo resumed work on Wednesday !ast, and made 4ft ahead over three-fourths of the cut. Prospects vere fairly good. No. 2 dredge is now being overhauled, and will, therefore, be idle for about a fortnight.' At the Warden's Court last Thursday, before Mr F. J. Burgess, warden, the Waihi Grand Junction Gold Mining Company was granted a certificate of protection for 12 months over various special' sites. An application by the Waihi Gold Mining Company for a sawmill area and two timber reserves of 200 acres was granted. The report of the manager of the Waihi Reefs Gigantic mine for the week ended January 26 is as follows:—" Good progress is being made with both cross-cuts at the 1000 ft level. Tho north face hits been extended 21ft and the south-east face 22ft, making the total distance driven for tlve week 46ft, and both faces arc penetrating excellent mineralised country, showing occasional bands of strong mineral and blotches of quartz formation. The distance driven north from the shaft now measures 134 ft, and south-east 55ft, and I do not think more favourable country exists anywhere on tho fields than that which we are penetrating. Tho coal supply is now coming in regularly, and all machinery is working well. I'he erection of new winding engine is well forward. This work is being carried on in a way not to interrupt the underground work."
