AUCKLAND, January 27,

A youth 19 years of age, named Leslie M'Kenzie, employed as a letter-carrier, came before Mr, E. C. Cutten, S.M., this morning on charges of having stolen in October a letter containing a 10s postal note, and in November another letter containing postal notes for 14s. M'Kenzie entered a plea of " Guilty," and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. AUCKLAND, January 27. At a meeting held in the Chamber of Commerce under the auspices of the Farmers' Union it was decided to join the New Zealand Farmers' Union breeders' and graziers' branch in order to conserve the interests of this branch of the industry. WESTPORT, January 26. The Governor and Lady Liverpool were officially welcomed this morning, and presented with an address. They visited the colliery districts, and were entertained by the citizens at luncheon. They left by motor at 2 p.m. for Reefton, en route to Greymouth, to join the Tutanekai for Milford Sound. HOKITIKA, January 27. Continued wet weather is interfering ■with haymaking and affecting winter feed for stock. Five {Dersons were charged in the court to-day with trading on Sunday. They were convicted and discharged. It was stated that the defendants were under the impression that ;is they sold soft drinks they could keep their premises open. These are the first cases of the kind heard here.

Florence Neville, married, was charged ■with shop-lifting. The evidence disclosed that the woman abstracted articles from the counter and gave them to her child, aged nine. When questioned, the child, at the mother's request, said that it was the thief. The woman was convicted anr? ordered to come up for sentence when called on. The child was sent to a receiving home.

A party comprising five members of the Westport Chamber of Commerce arrived here from Westport, via Nelson and Marlborough, having traversed the distance (487 miles) in 24 hours' actual travelling time, in a fully-loaded motor car. They will commence their return journey on Saturday.

TDIARU, January 26. Mr J. A. Valentine, secretary 'of the South Canterbury Education Board and assistant inspector under the board, has been appointed inspector under the new Act. He has, therefore, resigned the secretaryship. As the education district and board may be abolished by the commisthe department recommended the appointment of a temporary secretary, and Mr F. Millar, chief clerk, has been appointed acting secretary in addition to his present duties. The board has adopted the scheme of incidental grants to committees submitted by Mr Valentine, v which the smaller schools get a larn?r allowance and the bigger schools a smaller one than the Act suggests. INVER.CARGILL, January 27.

For using a billiard saloon for betting purposes Alexander Brennan was fined £20, and costs. For assisting in the business Henry Benjamin was fined £10.
