Branson, alias Jackson, who was arrested on board the Niagara at Auckland recently, is a well-known chaff merchant. He disappeared from home, and was supposed to have been drowned. It has been discovered that he is burdened with liabilities totalling £38,552. It has been ascertained that he received large sums in cash prior to his disappearance, which he did not bank. He was traced as far as Sydney, where he opened a bank account. Later he transferred his account to tha Canadian Bank. The police failed to arrest him in Sydney.
